Whooping cough cases increase

Practice History

One doctor, one staff member and a few hundred patients first established this practice in, 1972. We are now a training practice of five doctors, who are supported by a complement of staff that includes a practice manager, four nurses, a health care assistant, receptionists, secretaries and clerical staff.

The practice is supported by a team of district nurses, midwives, community psychiatric nurses (adult and child), health visitors and a practice counsellor. We have facilities for the disabled and have a large car park attached to the Health Centre. Other facilities include physiotherapy, podiatry and speech therapy for children.

Dr Helen Penfold

Three-quarter time partner. She joined the practice in 1990 and her professional interests include Family Planning and all aspects of Women's Medicine. Dr Penfold is also the lead for teaching medical students.

Dr Mark Saville
MB BCh (Wales 1987) DRCOG MRCGP Full-time partner and registered GP trainer. Joined the practice in 1991 and his particular interest is Diabetes.

Nurses

We have four Practice Nurses; Amanda, Lynn, Dawn and Natalia and Joy, an Assistant Practitioner. All work very closely with the Doctors and are trained to do an extensive number of procedures and tests. They may work along with the doctors, for example assisting in minor surgery or work alone in screening clinics, asthma and diabetes clinics and new patient assessments, etc.

You may book directly with the practice nurse for such services as foreign travel immunisation, cervical smears, medical advice etc. Our Health Care Assistant works under the close supervision of our Practice Nurses. She is fully trained to perform ECGs, blood pressure annual reviews, advice for those wishing to stop smoking and other routine health checks.

Our Practice Manager, Julie Perryer will be only too willing to help you with any administrative or non-medical aspects of your health and treatment. She is also available, by appointment, to discuss any suggestions, which may improve our service to you

Reception

All our staff are there To Help You and are pleased to do so. Supervised by Celia Franks, receptionists are your link with the rest of the practice. They may need to ask you medical details in order to work effectively and at all times are working under the instructions of the doctors. All information given to them is treated in confidence and they are bound by the same codes of conduct as the Doctors and Nurses. The more information you are able to give to the receptionists the better they will be able to assist you.

The midwife liaises with our doctors to care for mothers before and after delivery. Antenatal clinics are held weekly

Community Nurses

The community nurse visits those who are housebound for nursing care and general advice. This includes the elderly, chronically sick and those who have had operations.

Health Visitors

There are four health visitors and their main aim is to promote health in families and in young children. They work closely with the doctors and are involved in running development screening and baby clinics as well as antenatal classes.

Counsellors

We have the services of a qualified counsellor who offers individual counselling at the discretion of your doctor.
